The Crispiest Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Updated: Sep 24, 2021

crispy baked sweet potato fries

Sweet potato fries are one of my favorite sides! They are so tasty and are a great source of vitamin A and fiber. But I don't love when they lack a good crunch. This recipe is for the crispiest baked sweet potato fries, no frying necessary!

The key to the crispiest fries is in the way you cut your potatoes. Start by peeling your potatoes, then cut them the long way. Lay the flat side down and cut the long way again in about 1/4 inch strips, then again lying those flat and cutting about 1/4 inch wide strips. See image below:

Once you have all your fries cut, add them to a bowl with oil and salt, mix well.

On a parchment paper covered baking sheet, lay the fries so they are all one layer. It is tedious but if you want them to be crispy this step is key. You may have to use more than one baking sheet depending on how many fries you are making.

Bake your fries until they are turning dark on the ends, some of the smaller fries may get a little overdone but you can take these out earlier if you would like and put the rest back in.

Ingredients

[Serves about 6-10 dependent on the size of your potatoes]

2 large sweet potatoes

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil or oil of your choice

1 tsp coarse sea salt or kosher salt

Directions

  1. Start by preheating the oven to 400°.

  2. The key to the crispiest fries is in the way you cut your potato. First you will peel your potatoes. Now cut your potato in half the long way. Lay the flat side down and cut the long way again about 1/4 inch strips. Then again lay those flat and cut about 1/4 inch wide strips the long way. See image above!

  3. Once you have all your fries cut, add them to a bowl with the oil and salt and mix well. You can use your hands for this step, I find it easier due to their shape. You can also wait to sprinkle on the salt after the fries are on the pan if you would like.

  4. Next, place parchment paper on a baking sheet. Then lay the fries out so they are in one layer. It is tedious but if you want them to be crispy, this step is key. You may have to use more than one baking sheet depending on how many fries you are making.

  5. Place them in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes or until they are darkening on the ends. Some of the smaller fries may get overdone so you can take those out earlier if you would like, then put the rest back in for the remaining time.

  6. Enjoy right away for the most crunch!
