Chocolate Dragon Fruit Smoothie (Dairy Free, Pink Pitaya)

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Chocolate dragon fruit smoothie

This smoothie has a rich cocoa flavor balanced with lightly sweet dragon fruit and banana. It is fun twist on black forest or chocolate and strawberry by instead using bright pink dragon fruit, or also known as pitaya. All you will need is five simple ingredients plus ice. Be adventurous and try this tasty smoothie for a sweet snack, breakfast, or dessert.

All you will need for this recipe is 5-6 simple ingredients plus ice.

  • Frozen pink dragon fruit

  • Frozen bananas

  • Almond milk

  • Dutch processed cocoa powder

  • Honey or maple syrup

  • Optional: Cacao nibs or grated chocolate to top

The only fruit you will need for this smoothie is banana and pink dragon fruit (pitaya). I have found frozen dragon fruit at Target (cheapest), specialty grocery stores, Hy-Vee, and Costco. You can also replace the dragon fruit for strawberries or tart cherries if you can't find it.

I highly recommend using Dutch Processed Baking Cocoa as opposed to regular cocoa powder. It is much richer and will give a wonderful balance to this smoothie when paired with all the other sweet ingredients. I get mine at Costco. Trust me, once you go Dutch, you never go back!

Add your ingredients in the following order: fruit, milk, honey, ice, cocoa. Then blend until smooth!

There are a few optional toppings and add-ins. I like to use grated dark and or ruby chocolate, or cacao nibs to give just a little texture. However these are optional. I also like to add collagen for some protein.

Top, sip, and enjoy!

Ingredients

[Serves 1]

80-90 grams OR a heaping 1/2 cup frozen pink dragon fruit (or you can replace with strawberries or tart cherries)

80-90 grams OR heaping 1/2 cup frozen banana slices

1 cup vanilla almond milk or milk of choice

1 Tbsp Dutch processed cocoa powder (for richer flavor)

1 Tbsp maple syrup OR 1-2 tsp honey

A couple ice cubes

Optional Toppings and Add-ins

Grated chocolate-dark or ruby

Cacao nibs

Collagen

Directions

  1. Start by measuring out your frozen fruit. I typically just do a heaping 1/2 cup of dragon fruit and one medium banana. It doesn't have to be exact. Add these to your individual sized blender cup.

  2. Next add your milk of choice.

  3. Followed by your honey.

  4. Next if you would like you can add your grated chocolate or cacao nibs to be blended into your smoothie for some texture or skip this step and wait to top your smoothie with them after it is blended.

  5. Then add your ice, I typically use 3-4 ice cubes.

  6. Lastly add your cocoa powder and collagen if adding it.

  7. Blend your smoothie until smooth. Pour into your glass and top with chocolate and/or cacao nibs if desired. Enjoy!
